TAIWAN-BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Taiwan,which is officially known as Republic of China (ROC) is largest mountanious island nation in East Asia. It's immediate neighbour countries are China in North-West, Japan in North-East and Philippines in Southern side. Formerly, Taiwan was called Formosa.

BRIEF HISTORY-

* Taiwan was annexed to China in 1683 by Qing dynasty.

* After first Sino-Japanese war, Treaty of Shimonoscki/Treaty of Bakan was signed on 17th April,1895.According to treaty, Taiwan was ceded to Japan.

* Taiwan remained under Japan till second world war. In second world war Japan was defeated and was forced to surrender Taiwan to ROC, ruling party of China as they were member of Allies.

* Civil war took place in China between Kuomintang(KMT) led government of ROC and Communist Party of China. ROC get defeated and they shifted to Taiwan in 1950.

* KMT led government of ROC ruled as single party state for forty years,until democratic reforms in 1980s,which led to first ever direct presidential election in 1996.

ECONOMY-

Taiwan has a dynamic capitalist economy that is driven largely by industrial manufacturing and especially exports of electronics,machinery and petrochemicals.Basically, Taiwan is an export oriented economy. 

During 1960s decade Taiwan entered in period of of rapid economic growth and industrialization which is referred as "TAIWAN MIRACLE". Because of it has developed alongside Singapore,South Korea and Hong kong. Together they are known as "FOUR ASIAN TIGERS".
RELIGION-

PRESENT SCENARIO-

ROC led government of Taiwan was cosidered as legitimate ruler of China not Communist Party of China. But later the scenario changes. And in Oct 25,1971 United Nation General Assembly (UNGA)  voted to admit the People's Republic of China as legitimate ruler of China and expels ROC led Taiwan Government. Now, Taiwan don't have official diplomatic relation with any of UN members. Although, it has unofficial relations with most of the nations.

Because of  its expulsion from UNGA , Taiwan participates in International Sports Event under the name of "CHINESE TAIPEI".

INTERESTING FACTS-

* Taiwan is first Asian Country to legalise same sex marriage.It shows progressive mindset of Taiwan.

* It is still not recognized as Independent nation. Vatican city and 21 UN member countries has officially recognized it as an independent nation.

* Cycling is very popular in Taiwan. In most of  parts special cycling lanes are constructed.

* White colour represents death and mostly used in funerals.Red colour is represented as good luck and is used in wedding or celebrations.

* In 2011,  a survey shows the fertility rate was 0.9

   It makes Taiwan the lowest fertility rate country in world.

* When Portugese saw island of Taiwan in 16th century they called it IIHA Formosa i.e, beautiful island. Formosa name was formally accepted as its official name which was later renamed as Taiwan.
